Abstract
"Research indicates that mainstreamed classrooms throughout the United States are becoming more diverse with growing numbers of students who speak little or no English, but teachers may be inadequately trained to teach these students... The purpose of this project was to prepare a handbook for these teachers based on research of efive strategies for constructing literacy environments for english language learners in the mainstreamed primary (grades 1-3) classroom. The handbook contains suggestions and activities for organizing the classroom, using print-rich materials, and creating effective learning situations for language development and literacy."
