Abstract
This project reviews the literature on basal reading programs, the whole language approach, and phonics instruction. The related research was used to identify the need for a more balanced approach to elementary reading instruction. Holistic strategies, based on the whole language philosophy, were explained. These strategies were applied to a first grade phonics-based basal reading program. Lessons aand activities were developed to integrate holistic strategies with the phonics-based basal reading prgarm. Inplications for further research and teacher training were discussed."
